Magento ecommerce journey from 2001 to 2016
Magento is written is PHP and open source ecommerce platform. It employs MySQL/MariaDB relational database management system and elements of the Zend Framework. Varien incorporation founded in 2001, is US based firm and the founder of Magento. It was on startup phase at that time and first beta version was launched in 2007. The first general availability release of the Magento 1.0 software was on March 31, 2008. They released Version 1.1 with some upgrades on June 24, 2008 and version 1.2 released on December 29, 2008. At that time the ecommerce concept was not that much in demand, but nobody knows the future. So Magento ecommerce developers focused on their product development process and they get fruitful results.
In 2009 :
Magento ecommerce development process has various products like community edition, enterprise edition, enterprise cloud edition, commerce order management, and analytics, etc. In 2009, Magento launched 1.3 Community edition on March, 30; Version 1.6 in enterprise edition on April, 24. Magento earned it place in ecommerce market and they showed download figure has crossed 1 million + downloads on July, 14. But they never become over confident on their success and upgrade software as technology improves. On August 18, the released store manage app for Magento. Their journey becomes more and more excited as time goes on.
In 2010 :
On May 1st, Magento developers released the professional edition. 2010 became remarkable year for them as they launched mCommerce platform on May 28th. After that the demand of this ecommerce platform has got boost and they released Magento Go. But after months Magento Community feels that Magento Go was a distraction from the core platform. It has other reasons like too much complexity, running SaaS business is different, and they gave freedom to online retailers. So they shut down this cloud based service on 1st Feb, 2015. At the end of 2010, this company changed its name from Varien to Magento.
Roy Rubin, former CEO of Varien, sold around 49% ownership share of Magento company to eBay on 11th February, 2011. But on June, 6 eBay is announced as full owner of Magento itself. At the end of 2011, developers started the development process on Magento 2.0. In 2012, May 1st there was official declaration of professional edition has been cancelled. One big achievement in 2012 was, Magento connect has 5000+ extensions.
In 2013 to 2015 :
Magento is marked as leading in Alexa’s top IM site in 2013. Then Magento joins eBay enterprise on 30th November, 2013. At the end of year, they released Community Edition 1.8 and Enterprise Edition 1.13. At the ending of next year i.e. 2014 on 18th December Magento 2.0 developer beta was released. There was one big announcement done by IR is that they confirmed Magento in top 500 as fastest growing eCommerce platform. There was new versions of platform – CE 1.9 and EE 1.14. As we mention before, Magento Go and ProStores are closed on 1st February, 2015. Then developers introduced new security patches on February 9. On March 25, Magento 2.0 released and new improved community forum has been launched.

Some highlights from 2016’s are : They launched next-generation marketplace, enterprise cloud edition, first omnichannel airport shopping platform, leads European commerce platform market, declared holiday dashboard for merchants.
